Bharatiyam 2011 set in Motion

Day 1:

Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering (BVDUCOE) today witnessed the enthralling start of its annual national level techno-cultural fest Bharatiyam ’11.  The Inaugural Ceremony on 10th March, 2011 witnessed the distinguished presence of Dr. P.M. Bulakh, Director BCUD, of Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University as chairperson, Dr. K.N. Ganesh, Director IISER, Pune as chief guest Dr. Saurav Pal, Director NCL, Pune as guest of honor.  The inauguration environment was already overflowing with zeal and extravaganza and the arrival of guests added a new excitement to the young student crowd.

The ceremony started with a short documentary showing the glimpse of months of untiring efforts & activities put in by the entire team of Bharatiyam ’11.   The video further boosted up the spirits of organizing team as well as the vast number of participants eagerly awaiting the start of event.  Following it Principal, Dr. A.R. Bhalerao, presented short opening & welcome address.
In his address, Dr. A.R. Bhalerao expressed his pride to be heading an institute like Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering.  He mentioned that the slogan “Dare to Dream” of Bharatiyam ’11 is true to its innovative events practices and achieving an iconic status for the institute.  He appreciated the spirits & endeavor of students & staff who left no stones unturned for the excellence of this event.  He introduced and appreciated the august presence of the eminent guests.  He also mentioned that Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering has a rich tradition of technical excellence and keeping up to it, Bharatiyam ’11 is once again giving an opportunity to exhibit technical characteristics and potential, because quality is not just an act it’s a practice. Wishing Bharatiyam ’11 a great success he concluded saying that BVUDUCOE will continue cementing its place in the national arena with its rich tradition in technical excellence.

As per the tradition of Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering, the guests were felicitated with shawl, shreephal, bouquet and memento.   Dr. A.R. Bhalerao felicitated Dr. K.N. Ganesh & Dr. Saurav Pal. Dr. A.R. Bhalerao felicitated Dr. P.M. Bulakh.  The traditional lamp lighting ceremony, technicalized as switching on electric lamps via a remote, by the hands of chief guests and invocation of Goddess Saraswati, marked the start of inaugural ceremony. “Genre” the annual magazine that brings forth the literary merit of young engineers of Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering was released by the hands of Dr. Saurav Pal.  This was followed with the felicitation of representatives of various companies associated with Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering as sponsors and placement majors.  The chief guest and guest of honor felicitated them with barguests, shreephal and mementoes.

Following this was mesmerizing address of the guest of honor.  He said that it was a great honor for him to be addressing at the place.  He viewed Bharatiyam as a show piece of technical education imported at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering.  He also said that all the engineering colleges have a tradition of tech-fest but Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering is the oldest to start it.  The innovative ways student present it shows the extreme innovative talent & potential of students here.  Further expressing his views he went on to say that although India is progressing economically but lacking in intellectual progress.  This is due to the lack of enthusiasm, guidance & awareness towards innovative ideas.  Speaking over this he said the problem lies not in education but in the way innovation has not occurred out of education.  Giving importance to scientific innovation, he said any problem cannot be solved by specific engineering branch alone but by a combination inter disciplinary sciences and engineering techniques.  To stress his point he gave examples of Archimedes, Isaac Newton, who were inter disciplinary scientists.  Engineering connects to big issues of country by which country can advance he stated.  He also expressed his concern that basic engineering skills are vanishing since most engineers are turning towards I.T. but Electrical, Mechanical, Production, Civil engineers are reducing comparatively.  He concluded his speech saying that we should not rejoice only in economic growth but march ahead with intellectual and innovative progress.

Dr. K. N. Ganesh further lifted the enthusiastic spirits of the audience in his address. He started his address expressing his enormous joy of having students with him. He said that education is fundamentally important and the only thing which survives for civilizations. It’s only the way of imparting it that keeps on changing. Speaking about learning, he said that learning is nothing but knowledge of ignorance since every time a solution is found a new problem is created. He laid great emphasis on higher education in India. Emphasizing his point he gave the statistics of gross education ratio for India a only 12% as against the of world average of same as 30% and that in western countries as 60%. The reason for this he said is a serious shortage of good teachers. Stressing the importance of teachers he said it is important because it’s the teacher who teaches mentors and builds up student. He said that scientists are required since for any technology to proceed it must proceed with scientific research. Private institution plays a very important role here since government alone cannot suffice the needs. He further said that foreign universities should also be welcome for the purpose of research & education. He said that Pune, blessed with UG colleges in science and engineering, is proud to have an iconic institute like Bharati Vidyapeeth. Emphasizing on quality UG education, he said 18 to 25 years of age is the most creative age; hence innovative education should be provided in this age. He said that there are excellent colleges which provide good teaching for UG courses but no research orientation and research institutes which have excellent research guidance but no UG teaching. There needs to be institutes which have a blend of both and here only 5 IISER not necessary but at least 25 more such needed. Explaining the importance of scientific research education he put forth the biggest challenges viz., education, energy & environment. Explaining it he said petrol & natural gas a re on the verge of extinction in due 40 years & then there are the pollution problems. Material and medicines are also areas where everyone must contribute from scientist, engineers to doctors. He also supported the concern showed by Dr. Saurav Pal regarding reduction in basic engineering in India. Giving an example he said nano technology is seeing innovative education but bulk material production is not happening. He said unless India gets into bulk manufacturing and production, overall progress cannot be achieved. He said at such moment “Dare to dream” sounds very triggering. He also consented Dr. Saurav Pal in his views of interdisciplinary sciences and that too without drawing any boundaries. To explain his point he gave an example of noble prize winner Dr. Venky Ramakrishnan who was a scientist in Physics working on a biological problem and won a noble prize for his research in Chemistry. He concluded his address saying that instead of talking about “right to education”, “right education” must be talked about.

Dr. P. M. Bulakh addressed the audience & also explained how BVDUCOE is keeping its pace with the research demands of society and country with regards to education. He informed that BVDUCOE is the best institute of Bharati Vidyapeeth and it ranks second amongst the group as for research is concerned. Bharati Vidyapeeth has also established an interdisciplinary school and a nano-technology department is being started at BVDUCOE. Further speaking he said, BVDUCOE also has excellent collaboration with industries and is giving very high quality education. The proof of this being the fact that it is in the first 50 engineering institutes he stated proud fully. The Vice-chancellor’s conference organized here with the theme of governance in higher education shows the concern of this institute with respect to higher education and research he said. Concluding his address he officially declared Bharatiyam’11 as inaugurated and wished it a great success.

In his vote of thanks, Prof. D. M. Thakore, in-charge Bharatiyam’11, congratulated students for the well organized and co-coordinated event. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to guests and sponsors and the advisory members of BVDUCOE for the support and inspiration for making the endeavor a success. He concluded wishing the audience exciting 3 days of technical and cultural exhilaration.

The inaugural ceremony concluded with the national anthem. Later the crowd moved ahead to the venue of various technical events and stalls that were eagerly anticipated by everyone present there
There was another proud moment for BVDUCOE to host a Photo Exhibition entitled “Bio-diversity of Western Ghats”, which was inaugurated by the Guest of Honour Dr. Saurav Pal. This exhibition highlighted the current panoramic situation and conditions prevalent in the forests and undertaking an initiative to spread awareness about environmental degradation. As the United Nation has declared the year 2011-12 as forest year; hence this initiative was toward creating awareness about forest and the environment.

WE THE YOUTH

MAEERS’ MIT School of Government engineered a stepping-stone to mobilize the youth by organizing the 1st Indian Parliament of Student Council Leaders (Bharatiya Chatra Sansad) held from Jan 12-14, 2011 at MIT Campus, Pune comprising of eleven sessions. In the span of these three days, participants were given an opportunity to interact with prominent personalities from Politics, Spiritual, Environment, Media, Social movement, Entertainment and Sport World to interact with them and speak their mind on the dais. With a single minded devotion of channelizing the power of youth, the ‘Parliament of All India Student Council Leaders’, was a breeding ground for the young, enthusiastic and bright minds committed to lead the society, to effect political changes and to strengthen the democracy.

The sessions comprised of India’s best minds who have been “one of a kind” in their respective fields. Here is what they said to instill the youth with a sense of nation building and make them ambassadors of change to take on the challenges and occupy worthy offices in the democratic institutions of India

Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam

Former President of India

Dr. Kalam began by congratulating the conveners Dr. V. D. Karad and Mr. Rahul Karad on the successful organization of the program. He went on to say that as India is going through a tough phase the role of honest politicians has gained much importance. He divided his talk into different sections keeping the students as his target audience.

1. His experiences based on meetings with Parliamentarians of different countries including South Africa, Sudan and South Korea. He felt that the people all over the world want peace and harmony. For this, a Worlds Knowledge Platform is required. This needs a co-operation from politicians across the world.

2. His experience and aspirations for the youth:
According to him, youth want an electronically developed state. They want to change and convince politicians. He took a pledge from the students that they would only elect those who contribute to economic development. Youth should become unique rather than like everyone else.

3. Political system-
Equation: Politics=Political politics + Developmental politics
According to Dr. Kalam the first component should only be 30% and the remaining should be developmental politics. This can be achieved by the students/youth.
5. Vision for 2020
.

His Vision 2020 included Ten Pillars including reducing the rural-urban divide, provision of quality water, working of the three sectors namely agriculture, industry and services, development of healthcare, eradication of poverty, illiteracy and terrorism.
He concluded by encouraging the students to write their thoughts and send the same to him. He promised to respond to their queries via e-mail.

Aushotosh Gowariker
Shri. Ashutosh Gowarikar

Renowned Film Maker
This is what he had to say…
Media has various benefits, but the trouble is when the information is used as a source of entertainment. Due to increasing competition, media may distort facts, which is human tendency.
A bold phase for cinema, across all languages. Literatures are getting the focus they deserved. Audience wants a change, including the makers. The genres are also important, rather than just focus on comedy or entertainment; films can create a feeling of love about country. Patriotism is since birth, but nationalism has to be inculcated and there is a fine line between the two.
We are moved by numbers, more the numbers, more is the impact, similar to the response for this Council meet. Democracy is power to the people. It is not money, assets, affluence. Philosophers have claimed it is knowledge. Why be afraid? Why not oppose what disturbs us? Problem increases because we think the problem is not ours. Unity is required to address any problem.
A Sanskrit message says that a king is honored only in his kingdom, but a knowledgeable person is admired everywhere. Introduction of technology will bring about a radical change in rural India. This is what media can do. This is what the youth can do. By exchange of knowledge and ideas at various levels, collectively, societal problems can be solved.

Rahul Bajaj
Shri. Rahul Bajaj

Chairman, Bajaj Auto
One side we say we have a tradition of 5000 years and on the other side out of 110 Cr, 30 Cr are poverty struck which is approx. 35%.
Need of the hour- Idea, Institution and economy. We need an open, free but a regulated market so that big fish don’t eat the small fish. Today’s judiciary, legislative and common man should work hand in hand for a strong nation building. Division based on caste, religion, class, religion encouraged due to vote bank politics is wrong and these do not make country viable leading to dead end.  We need to overwrite corruption and inefficiency. Quality of leadership is important. It’s not the charisma; it’s the idea of understanding today and planning for tomorrow that will provide better opportunity.
Trial by media is not acceptable. The trial should be done according to the law and by the legislative body only. Media is doing a good job in bringing out the key issues that would help in the development of the nation and enlightens the minds of the young.

Sri Ravi Shankar
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Founder, Art of Living
He began by congratulating the organizers. His main message was:
Remember the role played by our freedom fighters and their integrity in achieving independence for India, remember the role of Mahatma Gandhi-his commitment to non-violence and honesty. The nation is yours and its responsibility is yours, take the challenge to save India from corruption. The rural-urban divide in India is the main cause of violence.
Vision of a developed world originated in India, the first university was in India. Moving from concept of GDP to GDH (Gross Domestic Happiness), the message from rural India is that of Humanity. Don’t live in isolation, face all difficulties with courage and try to overcome anger.
Expose yourself to the world and take good concepts from different nations.

LK Advani
Shri.L.K.Advani
Chairman,

Parliamentary Party ,BJP
He praised the innovative idea of MIT SOG itself and more over its lead in organizing the 1st student council leader parliament.
Security is an issue wherein a common man feels secure and safe for himself and his family. For the National Security, basic requirements of the soldiers should be fulfilled and exhaustive training needs to be given. Now-a-days, in villages girls are free to roam safely is an indication of good internal security.
Politics should be taught to young leaders; which MIT SOG is doing so well. 21st century will be India’s century, which is to be created by the youth and through the student parliament, good decisions could be taken which will be beneficial for our country’s progress.

Dr. Kiran Bedi

IPS (Retd.)
She congratulated organizers for making such a big event of YOUNG INDIA in which participants are not only present but also represent the future of India. She became an IPS officer in 1972 in the situations like illiteracy & poverty & bad mentality of society. Her inspiring words went along these lines.
Youth is the backbone of the nation. Youth leader needs to reach to those people who can’t get their living & to those where there are restrictions on women. The dowry tradition in India needs to be vanished & girls must avoid the candidate begging for dowry. Women must take efforts to eradicate corruption, make revolution in agriculture & corporate sector to lead India. Girls should develop their sport & cultural side also. India is having very few vocational schools (which create employment) as compared to Japan; this number is required to be increased to bring women empowerment. If steps for women empowerment are taken fast, then India can lead the world; because WOMAN is grassroot of India.
