Tata Sumo Victa vs. Mercedes G55

The Mercedes G55! The car at its first look is sure to get some travel wala’s and villagers excited thinking that their old reliable Sumo has got an upgrade and has somehow even managed to steal the TriStar logo of the Mercedes. Now considering that a lot of people think of the car to be an upgraded version of Tata Sumo, a cardiac arrest will always be on cards after hearing the price of the G55. The Newly launched Mercedes G55 AMG costs a staggering 1.1 Crore Rupees. Yes sir, you read it right. This makes the car more expensive then a Porsche Cayenne, An Audi Q7 and even the BMW 7 series. The Sumo Twin (well almost) is priced at 20 times the Sumo. We decided to pit G55 against the Sumo Victa (another TILT’s first), and check out how they fare.

g55

Looks:

On paper these two cars are reminiscent of each other, but see the two cars in celluloid and the difference is massive. G55 traces its roots to a 1970s German military design.  While the boxy shape of this G wagon is somewhat similar to the Sumo, it has “impossible to miss” beautifully crafted lines. Well that is what you expect from this car at the very least considering that G55 comes freshly graduated from the AMG finishing school. Now for those of you, who aren’t quite acquainted to AMG, it is Mercedes Special tuning division; they are expert at turning water into wine, lines into poems and just another car into an engineering marvel.

Sumo on the other hand is quite typically the uninvolving commuter car that seemed to be the refuge of so many commuters and the lifeline of travel operators in India. While Sumo may not be a showstopper but the car has evolved for the better in the form of Sumo Grande.

Standing side-by-side Sumo looks like the poor, unhealthy, skimpy distinct cousin of the G 55.

Performance :

Now let us first spell performance to you, its spelt as A M G. G55 has insane amount of power packed in, compared to the Sumo’s 68 BHP. The former churns out a massive 476-horse power or it’s more powerful than a Ferrari 360, an Aston Martin Vanquish and even a Porsche 911 Turbo. Now that makes G 55 an amazing combo of a rugged SUV look and a super car engine. The 5.5 Litre, supercharged V8 engine on G 55 is quite similar to what you see on the Mercedes SLR AMG. Despite weighing an enormous 2.5 tons G 55 clocks 0 – 60 in 5.5 seconds, Sumo on the other hand may just take a lifetime and an endless stretch of straight road to reach the triple figure mark. Sumo’s 2 litre engine is seriously low on torque for a car of its size, pumping 117 Nm of peak torque.

On off roads, G55 is a delight, with stiffer suspension taking on the mud holes totally into its stride and the handling is an absolute dream. Fitting an engine like this, in G55 is equivalent to hot young blonde marrying an old billionaire. It might not seem natural, but they both are gonna have an awesome amount of fun.

Sumo on the other hand is basically made for sad Indian roads and taking it off roads is a serious risk that may cost very very heavily on your pockets.

Verdict:

See G55 in flesh and one place that it will surely score very high points is the desirability factor, the car is like a Swiss knife, and every condition is just another condition. While on the rougher terrain the stiffer suspension the G55 makes it an absolute delight, the sheer presence of the car makes it the king of the Urban Jungle. The Sumo, on the other hand is neither jack-of-all-trades and is definitely king at none, but what it does offer is a tremendous value for money. It is a fairly comfortable commuter, one that wont burn deep holes in your pockets.

The G55 is the one the things to have happened to automobile industry and nothing else, we repeat nothing else is even remotely comparable to the sheer awesomeness of this car. If I had 1.1 Crore rupees to park in my garage, I would be running to the Mercedes showroom right now!!

THE HARLEY DAVIDSON TOURING ROAD KING

April 2010 saw the Foray of the World’s No.1 Cruiser bike brand into India. Well it wouldn’t be totally wrong to say, that the Harley’s were virtually traded for Mangoes. Yes while the Davidson motorcycles didn’t meet the Indian Pollution Norms, Indian Mangoes were just not good enough for the Americans. This is where, governments of both countries struck a deal, while the ‘non environment friendly’ Harley’s were given a green signal to hit the Indian Roads, Indian Mangoes got set to impress American taste buds.

Harley-Davidson Road King Custom 2006

Well enough of the history, the Bike we have on test today is The Harley Davidson Touring Road King, As the name suggests, the bikes is an out and out Touring Machine but is it really the ‘Road King’??? Lets find out..

Looks: (5 stars)

Harley Davidson!! Sheer name of the company sends one back to the 50’s when the extremely flamboyant Sports Bike was not what it is today and the Low Slung Cruisers ruled the road. The Harley Davidson Road king was first launched in the year 1994, with styling as its biggest asset. Not much has changed in this bike over the years as far as the styling is concerned.. But hey! Who is complaining? However minor tweaks to the exterior of this bike has made it even more desirable! The bike has a huge standing at 2465 mm of length and an awesome road presence. The styling is retro, but still very refreshing. The bike has tits and bits of leather and chrome that really add to the appeal of the bike, making it absolutely drop dead gorgeous.

Engine and Performance:

The HD Road King has a twin cam 96 engine, with a displacement of 1584cc. It has an air cooled V twin engine that is Fuel injected using the Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection also known as the ESPFI. The powerful Harley Engine Churns out a massive 127 Nm of torque @ 3750 revs per minute.

One thing that will really interest all bike enthusiasts is the use of belt drive in the final drive of the bike. Harley uses a belt instead of a chain because they claim chains are messy, need constant adjustment, wear out sprockets and have a relatively short service life. A belt on the other hand is clean, rarely needs adjustment, is easy on sprockets and has a very long service life. 100,000 miles or more from a belt is very common also Harley chose not to use shaft drive because it is inefficient in that it robs power from the bike due to friction.

The HD Road king is equipped with a 6 Speed Cruise Drive that makes high speed cruising an absolute delight.

You cant call the HD Road King a really fast machine, neither can it be used to zip around in the city (and you would have to be a real idiot to try that, considering the bike weighs more than 300 kgs) but what it does and does splendidly well is the mile munching. You can hit the highways and cruise on for miles without any sort of pain.

The bike performs marvelously along the corners with the perfect weight balance however a better suspension would have been a really welcome change considering the Indian Roads.

The Price:

For the Indian Consumer, at the end of the day, it all boils down to the two most important questions, how much is the price?? And how much is the average?? Well we all know the Harley Davidson’s to be exclusive machines, one that attracts a lot of attention but they come at a price, the HD Touring Road King retails for 20.45 lakhs ex-showroom!! And to imagine putting in a lakh rupee more, you can get the BMW X1. Anyhow the bike is totally worth the price it demands! As far as the fuel efficiency is concerned, if it really bothers you, this HD will give you an efficiency of 15-20 kmpl. That is decent enough considering the size of the engine.

Final Verdict :

The HD touring Road King is an expensive machine, and it would really set you in a dilemma whether it is sane to put in that kind of money for a biking indulgence. But we say, if you have that kind of money and a passion for some serious biking, it doesn’t get better than this. This HD is undoubtedly worth the money, see it in celluloid and you will be floored for sure!

CLASH OF THE TITANS … OR IS IT?
The mighty MARUTI 800 takes on the FREELANDER 2

As insanely bizarre as it may sound, but you did read the heading correctly, the article will be featuring this crazy comparison between these two massively different cars from very different segments and eras. So, without further ado I’ll let the scrutinizing begin!
Of the two cars, that we have at logger heads today, one has been ruling Indian roads for past three decades (and has been recently discontinued) while other has seen raking up huge volumes over the past year ruling the Indian Off roads with its wonderful all Terrain Drive system. While one will cost you just about 2 lakh rupees, the other will set you back by 4 million rupees.

 PERFORMANCE :
There are different parameters on which one may judge performance, while an average Indian, would consider the 800 virtually maintenance free, with a high mileage engine that’ll run effortlessly for decades with great performance, the cash rich spoilt Indian brat will judge performance by the 161 BHP generating Land Rover Engine, that has a top whack of 240 kmph.
VITAL STATS
LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2
0 – 60 : 4 seconds
0 – 100 : 8 seconds
MARUTI 800
0 – 60 : 35 seconds
0 – 100 : should be there by the time you finish reading this article (hopefully)

THE MELODRAMA :
Maa, look my first car…well this is something that you won’t be able to say with the Freelander (unless you are a Tata or Ambani). There is a lot of melodrama that is attached with the “1st CAR”, and most of us have had a 800 as the first car at our homes. When it comes to comfort, the 800 for a first time car user is a pretty comfortable car, being ones first car, it promotes him from his Bajaj Chetak to a vehicle with a hood.  It is a very very basic 4 seater, that has inadequate leg space for the rear seat passenger, and long journeys can be a pain.
Keeping the melodrama aside, the Freelander is HUGE (in comparison). With its tall stance, it has adequate headspace and the car is fairly comfortable for 5 people. The boot is decent and can easily gulp your weekend luggage.
THE GIZMO’s
Whom are we kidding?? The only gizmos that comes with the 800 are headlights and air conditioner and yeah an optional Stereo system. While the air conditioner just about does its job, it takes away all the power from the car ( Yes .. ALL 37 BHP of it) and makes you wonder whether you will be able to overtake the cyclewala in front of you.
Coming to the Freelander, it is an all time 4 X 4, with 90 % of the power being transmitted to the front wheels unless the car is in trouble. It is equipped with a fantastic all Terrain Drive system, that does its job fairly well. Other features are basic with the CD system, the auxiliary input and the climate control. However even in the Freelander some basic features like Reverse parking sensor, USB input and electronically adjustable front seats are missing, which is a big let down considering the price of the car.

ON ROAD & OFF IT:
It would have taken serious guts or one should have been amazingly drunk to have the courage to take the 800 for some off roading. Serious guts and some alcohol got us to take it for off roading and Olaaaa!! The pain in the ass materialized into satisfaction as our 800 did not disappoint and proved us right by managing to get itself stuck in every pothole possible.
The Freelander on the other hand had these mud and sand ridden terrains as its forte (thanks to the fulltime 4 x 4) it glided through sand, mud , water and practically any terrain. The real test however was to see how the Freelander did in city traffic at its entire glory.

THE KING OF THE CITY :
One would have thought that the small and nimble size of the 800 would see it outsmart the Freelander but we realized the absence of power steering in the 800 is a major headache. Parking the car, and driving the car through city traffic is a nightmare. However, you will be more relaxed and chilled out in your 800, a dent here and a nick there on your Maruti wouldn’t really matter as every kind of vehicle (manual, digital or automatic) tries to stamp its authority on Indian roads.

VERDICT :
Well this is the ultimate challenge for us, cause even when the idea of this story was conceived we never really knew what conclusion will we draw from this comparison. The 800 has ruled the roads and our hearts for decades and maybe now its time for it to gracefully retire and make way for bigger, better and more powerful cars. However, the legend of 800 shall live on!

Vehicles that defined the Decade

TEN VEHICLES OVER THE DECADE , THAT CHANGED THE INDIAN AUTO SECTOR

2000: HONDA ACTIVA

honda_activa_family_outing

There were scotteretes and there were scotteretes, then came the Honda Activa. Initially the Indian non geared rooster was ruled by much smaller vehicles like the Bajaj Spirit and TVS scooty, and in the year 2000 Honda (HMSI in India) brought in the Activa , a 100cc non geared scooter that was initially perceived as a little too big and heavy for the Indian women to ride on. One had his doubts whether how successful Honda’s strategy would be, but almost a decade after its launch the Honda Activa still rules the Indian roads (and our hearts) with the impeccable quality, smooth ride and oh so hassle free driving in city traffic. The Activa surely changed the way one looked at the non geared market and following its stupendous success, rival Hero Honda, which hadn’t EVER forayed into ungeared scooter segment (with brand name Hero Honda) launched its first scotterete.

2001: BAJAJ PULSAR:

The year of 2001 saw two major launches The Bajaj Pulsar and the Skoda Octavia. However we decide to go in for the Pulsar. It was the first time that Bajaj had done away with the Kawasaki Brand name and launched a motorcycle that was totally indigenously developed. The Pulsar initially was launched in two variants of 150 cc and 180 cc. Bajaj had went ahead and did, what most bike makers in our country refrained to do, it had broken the shackles of uninteresting, depressing looking, fuel efficient commuter motorcycles and had launched a bike that would make the bike enthusiast jump of his seat and get his hands on one. A sports segment was created in the Indian two-wheeled market, which people thought never existed and Bajaj still is the market leader in this segment. What followed after the launch of the Pulsar was a slew of more 150cc “me too” motorcycles which tried to displace the Pulsar from its reign but till date have been unsuccessful. The Pulsar has surely changed the way Bikes are perceived today, they are just not vehicles that get you from point A to Point B, but are more fun to ride and much better to look at.

2002 : HONDA CITY:

Honda Cars ( Honda SIEL in India) had been in the Indian market for more than 4 years , and having rolled out two previous generations of the Honda City, the 2002 Honda City was the third generation Honda City for India. The 2002 City churned out huge numbers for Honda, and till date is the best seller in its segment. While the City had the love it or hate it radical looks, it was accepted with all warmth by the Indian consumer, that saw the car’s sales soaring up and Honda’s pockets filling up. The City set a bench mark at the price range where it virtually had no competitor until very recently, when the VW Vento was launched. The City was thus the first full-fledged sedan that raked high volumes in India.

Corolla

2003 : TOYOTA COROLLA:

Better late than never. The Indian Market had been taken very seriously by auto makers all over the world, and 2003 saw the launch of the world’s best seller in India, The Toyota Corolla. The Car that clocked the highest sales figures world over was now available for the Indian Consumer, and boy did the consumers respond to Toyota’s decision the car within months of launch, snatched the market share from Skoda Octavia that had been ruling the segment for quite some time and in no time became one of the best sellers in India. What the corolla also did was to strengthen Toyota’s foothold in the Indian market making it the second successful model in Toyota India’s portfolio after the Qualis.

2004 : MARUTI SUZUKI SWIFT :

The end of 2004, saw the launch of a car , that was set to change the whole small car market scenario in India. Maruti drove in the Suzuki Swift . What followed was a story that need not be told, it’s a story known by all of us. The Swift was an Instant hit, and has been in waiting all over India ever since its launch. Such was the success of Swift that in 2007 it prompted Maruti to launch an Exclusive Made for India sedan on the platform of the Swift , the Swift Dzire. Swift soon became the No.1 choice of all college goers, all young entrepreneurs and even of some first time car buyers.

2005: TOYOTA INNOVA :

In 2005, Toyota did the unbelievable. They discontinued its all time best seller (in India) the Qualis and replaced it with the Innova, that was not only a little bigger than the Qualis but also a lot more expensive. The general perception in the minds of people were that Toyota had gone nuts discontinuing the Qualis, but wollaaahhh !! 5 years after its launch the Innova is the market leader in its segment (by a long shot) , it not only enjoyed more success than the Qualis but also replaced the word “ Big Car” by the word “Innova” in our vocabulary.

2006 : HONDA CIVIC :

Lets be true to ourselves. At some point of time we have aspired to own a Civic. The Car had that kind of aura around it , that made it so so desirable. 2006 saw the world best seller Toyota Corolla taking a thrashing left right and Centre by Honda’s latest entrant the Civic. The Corolla sales dropped to an all time low and the segment had a new king The Honda Civic. The Car with its bold look and futuristic interiors had struck the right chord with the Indian Consumer, and like most international markets it gave the Corolla a tough run for its money.

BMW_Series3_black_l

2007 : BMW 3 SERIES :

In 2007 , 13 years after arch rival Mercedes Benz forayed into India, BMW entered the Indian luxury markets with two products to offer the 3 series and the 5 series. Both the models were instant hits with the Cash Rich Indian, who now had an option to chose, while buying his 30 lakh rupee car, and within two years of its launch , in 2009 , BMW displaced Mercedes Benz from its numero uno position and became the largest player in the luxury car segment , a position it still holds. The entry of BMW in India, also made it clear of how seriously car manufacturers all over the Globe were looking at the Indian Auto Sector.

2008 : TATA NANO

The Nano. Well , despite the ups and downs despite the controversies , despite the fire incidents , the Tata Nano could well be the car of the Decade. It was the car, that got the attention of all and I mean all car manufacturers across the globe to India and to a man Mr.Ratan Tata , who , to his promise brought in a car that was within the reach of the common man in India , never could the world think that a car worth $2000 could be made. The Nano created news world over and despite the Silgur incident Ratan Tata was able to launch the car at a little above a lakh rupee, and Tata has managed helping many people realize their distant dream of owning a car.

2009 : JAGUAR LAND ROVER

Most people in India might have been unaware of these two names Jaguar and Land Rover. in 2008 Tata Motors bought these two companies from Ford and launched the two brands in India , the Jaguar came in with the XF and the Land Rover came in with the Freelander. These two brands are historic in themselves as one brand defines sportiness and luxury while the other is the epitome of off roading, And now two of the world’s most prestigious brands were INDIAN . This only goes to show the strength that Indian Economy has achieved and the pivotal position it is acquiring in the Global Auto Market.

Harley-davidson_17a07

2010 : HARLEY DAVIDSON :

“Harley’s for Mangoes” well this is the headlines that struck most news papers and magazines when Harley was finally going to Foray into the Indian Market. Americans didn’t find Indian Mangoes and the pesticides and fertilizers used for them to grow suitable for their countrymen and neither did the Indian Government find Harley meeting the pollution norms here, so the mutual deal was to allow each do business in the other’s country, and so came Harley Davidson , the most prestigious motor cycle brand world wide to India. With its first showroom in Hyderabad and 4 more that followed, it is significant that how much the Indian Bike rider grown. With other major manufacturers pouring in interesting bikes and cars the year 2011 seems to be a treat.

THE MOST ANTICIPATED CARS AND BIKES OF 2011:

The year 2011 will see launches from all spectrum of the automobile industry. While we are keenly waiting for the Toyota Etios which will spruce up the mid size car segment , everyone is also eagerly waiting for the Brio , Honda’s new small car that aims to shake the small car market and make a space for itself.

Also another interesting Honda that will find its way to India in April 2011 is its two wheeled Marvel the CBR 250R, that will be pitched in against the Kawasaki Ninja, but to think of it , The Ninja is almost twice as expensive as the CBR. Speaking of Ninja, Bajaj also plans to bring in the bigger kwacker, the Kawasaki Ninja 650 sometime soon in 2011, also we can expect Bajaj to roll out the KTM Duke 125 in the first quarter next year.

Coz its a BMW

COZ AFTERALL ITS A BMW

For the first time BMW has launched the 525 diesel version of the popular 5 series sedan in India, and has created quite a stir in the segment. Diesels are popular in India, a cliché used too often, but frankly diesels are where the fun lies today. As companies are looking to rake up higher volumes by coming out aggressively with bigger and better diesel engines (and one often wonders why Honda is missing out, anyways) TILT India puts the 525d on an extensive road test to see whether the torquey BMW is up to the task.

DESIGN: = (4 and a half)

Its first look might leave you a tad disappointed, coz BMW seems to be losing the mojo that made it ..ah… well BMW. The sporty-ness of the previous generation 5 series has been parted with for subtle elegant styling. Following the foot steps of the 7 series, the new 5 series looks like a luxury sedan, one which has brilliantly carved out corners. The new headlight does remind one of the 7 series, but am sure no complains have been lodged against that.

Coming to the rear end of the car, the subtle changes are evident in the rear as well, with tail lights being unmistakably similar to the X6. BMW seem to be following a particular design cue here, and one might not be surprised if similar design patterns are seen on the next 3 series also.

In India the 5 series is pitched up against the Mercedes E class, while looks depend on individual’s perspective but see both the cars in celluloid and my vote goes to the new 5 series for being drop dead gorgeous. 5 comes across as more masculine and sporty whereas the E maintains its subtlety.

To wrap it up the new 5 series looks like a down-scaled 7 series, and is unmistakably BMW.

INTERIORS:  (4 and a half Star)

When it comes to interiors, there is little that separates one BMW from the other. In fact, the interiors of this car are almost similar to the one it replaces with minor changes in the design of the steering wheel and a little shuffling between the air con and music system.

The car comes with the famous BMW iDrive system and the interiors look rich and classy. The quality of plastic and wood is top notch, and I specially like the design of the gear, which gives the cabin a sci-fi touch. The car is equipped with Push button start, automatic sun screen, one touch sun roof, rear AC vents, climate control, Cruise Control, Bluetooth connectivity, driver and pillion 8 way automatic seats , seat memory for both the front seats , AUX and USB connectivity … etc etc etc … the feature I really love though is , when you open the driver door the steering automatically goes up for you to easily get in/out and automatically comes into position when the door is closed.

The 8 inch screen is really interactive and helps you control the music system, sync your phone to the car though a touch screen would have been way better. Also the absence of Navigation option is a big let down.

The back seat of the car is not the most comfortable in the lot, with just about adequate leg space though over long drives the cabin may feel a little cramped up. Also unlike the Mercedes the rear passenger does not get climate control on the rear AC vent. Cute little storage spaces are available in the rear arm rest, and the cup holders pop out of it.

Overall the interiors of our BMW are high on technology but a little low on comfort as compared.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE: 4 stars

The 525d is powered by the BMW straight six cylinder engine that displaces 2993 cc and pumps 204 bhp of max power @ 3750 rpm , the

The engine on the new 525d comes with an eight speed automatic transmission, which along with great drivability gives phenomenal fuel efficiency of 9.8 kmpl in city, which considering the size of the engine is quite impressive.

The 525d is fairly quick of the blocks and reaches three figures in just under 8 seconds, and has a top whack of 250 kmph (limited). When on the road, jerks during gear shifts are practically absent, thanks to the beautifully crafted automatic gear box.

The car handles like a dream and is very smooth around the corners, something that you always expect from BMW, however the new 5’s steering feels a lot more assisted, and that does take away the edge, never the less the car is a typical BMW with excellent, or rather in BMW’s words, Efficient Dynamics.

The Rear suspension in the current range of 5 series is a little softer as compared to the previous generation, which accounts for comfortable rear seat drive. It is an all Aluminium multi link suspension that is primarily responsible for the comfortable drive.

VERDICT: 4 stars

The question that arises is that do we really need a verdict when it comes to a BMW?? In the 2010,5 series is an elegantly crafted piece of art, that looks macho, stylish sporty and yet so elegant. The new 5 series shares the platform with the 7 series and resembles its older sibling a lot, whether it’s the head lamps or the tail lights or even the interiors. One though has to compromise a little on leg space, but the brilliant handling and efficient yet frugal engine makes up for it quite a lot. The 5 series is an excellent choice in this segment and a very tough competitor for the new E class. We say, if u want to have some fun (SERIOUS FUN) give the new 5 series a shot!!
